Are you SAFR not? A Flood Risk Identification GIS Web Mapping Application – UPDATE

Abstract

This talk will give an update on what has been happening with the Structures at Flood Risk (SAFR) web mapping application. Developed by the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) with support from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources/Office of Water Resources (IDNR/OWR) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), SAFR hosts data produced during structure specific flood risk assessments for multiple areas in Illinois. Data from surveys of said structures, combined with annual-chance exceedance depth grids for multiple events, are analyzed to estimate what losses would occur if these areas were to experience flooding. The SAFR web map allows community floodplain managers in the project areas to select individual structures and display or download the estimated flood losses, surveyed elevations, and flood depth data for use in aiding mitigation efforts.

Zoe Zaloudek

Geospatial Application Developer, Illinois State Water Survey

Zoe Zaloudek, GISP, CFM, is a Geospatial Application Developer at the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS). She has worked with GIS at ISWS for 20 years. Currently she works on the Coordinated Hazard Assessment and Mapping Program (CHAMP), a team that develops FEMA Flood Risk Products and works on hazard mitigation planning products. Her tasks include generating a variety of spatial data and maps using ArcGIS and Python, in addition to creating web mapping applications using ArcGIS Server and the ArcGIS API for JavaScript. She earned her B.A. in Geography at the University of Illinois-Urbana in 2005, and her M.S. in Geographic Information Systems at the Johns Hopkins University in 2016.

Brad McVay

GIS Specialist, Illinois State Water Survey

Brad McVay, GISP, CFM, is a GIS Specialist with the Illinois State Water Survey, a division of the Prairie Research Institute of the University of Illinois. Working with the Coordinated Hazard Assessment and Mapping Program (CHAMP), he has 20 years’ experience providing GIS support on a variety of flood risk projects throughout Illinois. A Hazus Trained Practitioner, he has experience working with FEMA’s Hazus loss estimation software on several projects, most recently focusing on structure specific flood risk assessments. Brad received a Bachelor of Science in Geography from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater.
