The NEW ILGISA GIS MOOC Workbook

Abstract

Have you ever completed a “MOOC” before? A MOOC is a “massive open online course” designed to provide content through a learning experience at your own pace. ILGISA has offered a MOOC designed for those new to location technologies, which has over two hundred users over the past few years. It is free, open to all, and easy to access for everyone. It comes with free access for a limited time to a licensed version (Organizational account) of ArcGIS Online and an opportunity to use Quantum GIS (QGIS) to experience the use of GIS processes. New for the MOOC is a Creative Commons Open Educational Resource (OER) Workbook, which can be shared freely, and presents learning about why location technologies is critical to understanding spatial relationships and applies to a multitude of fields. The Workbook presents both Esri and QGIS materials. Spread the word to those you know who are new to location technologies to learn about how they might use the Workbook as part of the ILGISA MOOC.

Dr. Rich Schultz

Dr. Rich Schultz is currently an Instructor of GIS and Dones at DePaul University, Wheaton College, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. He has served on the ILGISA Board of Directors and is also a Past President. He formerly served as an Associate Research Scientist at the Prairie Research Institute as part of the Illinois State Geological Survey. He has prior experience as a tenured faculty member, university program coordinator and program director, creator of three entirely online programs in geospatial technologies, and associate dean. He has served as the Associate Director of the National Science Foundation-funded National Geospatial Technology Center of Excellence (GeoTech Center) in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Dr. Schultz holds a Ph.D. in environmental geochemistry from the University of Cincinnati and is an internationally recognized expert on geospatial education. He is the sole or senior author of more than ninety publications, book chapters, presentations, and abstracts. His major areas of research are online/distance learning, spatial cognition and geospatial thinking, unmanned aerial systems (drones), global climate change, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the use of technology in teaching geography literacy. He has received over $7.3 million in extramural funding to support his research.Dr. Schultz was the recipient of the National Distinguished Teaching Award from the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE). He has also received the “GIS Service Award” for geospatial education service from the Illinois GIS Association (ILGISA) and was the inaugural recipient of the Richard Hilton Collaboration Award from ILGISA.
